Tessuti Urbani: uno Storytelling per Prato / Urban Fabrics: a Storytelling for Prato
Il progetto consiste nella riqualificazione urbana di Piazza dell'Università a Prato (Toscana), mirando alla risoluzione di due questioni principali: quella riguardante la soppressione del degrado e quella riguardante l'aspetto narrativo per raccontare al meglio la città attraverso forme, materiali, sensazioni.
La zona di intervento è storicamente legata all’industria tessile, che ha reso celebre la città di Prato. Per questo motivo ho voluto renderle omaggio mettendo in luce, letteralmente, il più grande punto di forza della città, il tessuto.
The project consists in the urban regeneration of Piazza dell'Università in Prato (Tuscany, Italy), aiming at the resolution of two main issues: the first one concerning the urban decay and the second one about the narrative aspect that I want to add to the project to describe the city through shapes, materials, sensations.
The intervention area is historically linked to the textile industry, which made the city of Prato famous around the world. For this reason I decided to pay tribute to the city by highlighting, literally, its greatest strenght: the fabric.

Il punto focale del progetto consiste in una linea luminosa in vetro calpestabile, che parte da un estremo della piazza per estendersi su tutta la sua lunghezza. Il vetro è stratificato con vari tipi di tessuti dai colori neutri con diverse fantasie e trame; la luce LED posta al di sotto del vetro fornisce un’illuminazione morbida e suggestiva.
The focal point of the project consists in a lighting line in walkable glass starting from one end of the square to the other one, over its whole lenght. The glass is layered with many types of natural colored fabrics with different patterns and textures; the LED placed underneath the glass provides a soft and suggestive lighting.
Le aree della piazza più affollate sono implementate con Pavegen, un tipo di pavimentazione smart che converte i passi delle persone in energia cinetica che viene utilizzata per alimentare il LED dell’illuminazione centrale, oltre a raccogliere dati utili riguardo all'energia generata, all’afflusso di persone giornaliero, agli orari di punta.
Una feature interessante di Pavegen è quella che riguarda il sistema di ricompense: comunicando con gli smartphone attraverso bluetooth, permette agli utenti di riscattare premi in base a quanta energia hanno generato con i loro passi, incoraggiando così il movimento fisico e la frequentazione. Un esempio di ricompensa potrebbe essere un caffè in omaggio al bar della piazza una volta raggiunta una certa soglia di energia generata (https://pavegen.com/).
The most crowded areas of the square are implemented with Pavegen, a smart flooring system that converts steps in kinetic energy used to power the LED of the central lighting, in addition to collect data about the generated energy, the daily influx of people, the peak times.
An interesting feature of Pavegen is the one related to the reward system: through communication with smartphones via bluetooth, it allows users to unlock rewards based on how much energy has been generated with their steps, encouraging physical activity and attendance. An example of reward might be a free coffee at the bar once a certain threshold of generated energy has been reached. (https://pavegen.com/).
Il nome del bar, “YARN” (= filato o racconto; il verbo “to yarn” significa tessere una trama, raccontare una storia), unisce il mondo tessile con il concetto di narrazione, mettendo a fuoco ancora una volta la finalità del progetto.
The name of the bar, "YARN" combines the textile world with the concept of narrative, focusing once again on the purpose of the project.

Nell’arredamento del bar, oltre all’utilizzo del tessuto stesso (negli elementi del bancone e sul piano dei tavolini), sono stati impiegati altri materiali che lo rievocano nelle texture e nei pattern, come ad esempio le serigrafie delle finestre che richiamano a dei motivi popolari della tradizione tessile.
For the furnishing, in addition to the use of the fabric itself (in the elements of the bar counter and on table tops), other materials that remind of fabric textures and patterns have been used, like the serigraphs on the windows that evoke popular fabric patterns of the textile heritage.
I packaging dei prodotti take-away dello Yarn Bar riportano i motivi ispirati al tessuto anche sulle buste in carta riciclata per mantenere la stessa linea estetica con un’impronta eco-friendly.
Packagings of Yarn Bar take-away products bring back the patterns inspired by fabrics on the recycled paper bags to maintain a cohesive aesthetic identity with an eco-friendly imprint.
